Root canal therapy is the act of treating the center of an inflamed tooth. Inside every tooth is a soft substance of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue that keeps it nourished, healthy, and strong. Sometimes, due to the decay of enamel around it, the pulp can become infected with bacteria.

When Root Canal Therapy May Be Recommended:
- Severe Toothache: Persistent, severe tooth pain, especially when chewing or applying pressure, may indicate the need for root canal therapy.
- Prolonged Sensitivity: Long-lasting sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, even after the source of heat or cold has been removed, can be a sign of damaged or infected pulp.
- Discoloration of the Tooth: A tooth that becomes darkened or discolored may have internal damage, indicating the need for a root canal.
- Swollen or Tender Gums: Swelling, tenderness, or a persistent pimple on the gums near the affected tooth can be symptoms of infection requiring root canal treatment.
- Deep Decay or Infection: Extensive tooth decay or infection that has reached the pulp (the innermost part of the tooth) often necessitates root canal therapy.
- Chipped or Cracked Tooth: A tooth that is chipped or cracked, especially if the damage extends into the pulp, may need root canal therapy to prevent infection and further damage.
Symptoms of a pulp infection include visible swelling of the tooth, a major sensitivity to temperature, and/or pain in the tooth and gums. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, contact us at Largo Dental Studio for a consultation.
